Unit 001 - Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus (1 Day)
This one-day course, often called Cat & Genny is designed to make candidates aware of the dangers involved in excavating on public
highway and private land and train them to detect and avoid buried apparatus. Operatives or Supervisors can attend this course


Objectives
The course is designed to make candidates aware of the dangers involved in excavating on public highway and private land and train
them to detect and avoid most buried apparatus. Everyone connected with excavation will benefit from this course, including:
designers and planners, safety personnel, site management and all operational staff including machine operators.


Course Content
• Responsibility under Health & Safety at Work Act.
• Responsibility to work to HSG47 (The avoidance of underground services)
• Obtaining and understanding utilities drawings
• Observation of surface features – manholes, lamp standard etc
• Use of locating Cat and Genny or similar.(Digi Cat)
• Careful excavation
• Practical assessment


Unit 002 - Signing Lighting and Guarding (1 Day)
NRSWA Supervisors (unit 10) or NRSWA Operatives (unit 2) is the requirement for all personnel employed by local authorities,
utilities companies and their contractors for the purpose of any roadworks in the highway where they have to sign, light & guard any
excavations or works on the highway or footpath.


Objectives
On completion of the course delegates will be able to:-
• Understand the safety implications of carrying out streetworks, with particular reference to the protection of persons engaged
on the works and avoidance of danger to the general public
• Appreciate the need to maintain the free movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at the site of the works to comply with
the restrictions imposed by the works and the adoption of safe working practices
• Demonstrate the correct layout of appropriate signs, barriers, lamps, warning notices etc in compliance with the relevant
advisory documents
• Recognise conditions that may necessitate the introduction of special measures such as the installation of portable traffic
signals, traffic diversion, road closure etc
• Maintain the correct operation of portable traffic signals and reposition equipment as work proceeds

NRSWA Streetworks 1-5 Days - Supervisors
NRSWA Streetworks, Units 1+10-14+16 are the standard units required for NRSWA Supervisors who are required to monitor &
supervise the opening up / excavation and re-instatement of the highway as part of their working duties.


Objectives
For any supervisor charged with the responsibility of over seeing excavation & reinstatement on the public highway, to gain
accreditation to the standards laid down by City & Guilds in line with the New Roads & Street Works Act 1991 for excavation &
reinstatement


Course content
Unit 001 - Location & avoidance of underground services
Unit 010 - Monitoring Signing, Lighting & Guarding. Co-ordination procedures & code of practice
Unit 011 - Monitoring Excavation in the highway. Specifications, techniques, road types, materials
Unit 012 - Monitoring Reinstatement & compaction of backfill materials
Unit 013 - Monitoring Reinstatement of non-bituminous sub-base & road-base materials
Unit 014 - Monitoring Laying practices and reinstatement of cold lay bituminous materials. Specification & types of
materials
Unit 016 - Monitoring Reinstatement of modular surfaces & concrete footways
To meet the legal requirements of people excavating in the highway, the course must meet the City & Guilds criteria. A suitable road
area to carry out all practical aspects of the course must be available.


NRSWA Streetworks 1-5 Days - Operatives
NRSWA Streetworks, Units 1-6+9 are the standard units required for NRSWA Operatives who are required to open up / excavate and
re-instate the highway as part of their working duties


Objectives
For any operatives involved in excavation & reinstatement on the public highway, to gain accreditation to the standards laid down by
City & Guilds in line with the New Roads & Street Works Act 1991 for excavation & reinstatement


Course content
Unit 001 - Location & avoidance of underground services
Unit 002 - Signing, Lighting & Guarding
Unit 003 - Excavation in the highway. Specifications, techniques, road types, materials

To meet the legal requirements of people excavating in the highway, the NRSWA course must meet the City & Guilds criteria. If this
course is to be undertaken away from a training centre, adequate facilities in the form of a roadway with the unpredicted movement of
both vehicles and pedestrians, together with the necessary signs, cones and barriers
